Supplement Round Up: CBD Oil

What is CBD?
CBD stands for Cannabidiol. It is extracted from the flower of hemp plant. This substance does not have any psychoactive effects like THC in marijuana. This supplement is rising quickly in the market with everyone form cancer patients to professional athletes are using it for its purported benefits. It’s even appearing in sports drinks (thanks to Floyd Landis). It’s a legal substance and is not banned in the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
Do hemp seeds contain CBD?
Hemp seeds are an edible food and do not produce the same effect as CBD. Hemp comes from the seed and CBD oil comes from the flowers of the plant. They are also both manufactured in different ways. They both do not produce the “high” and only CBD oil may contain traces of THC.
What does CBD do?
CBD oil has been shown to help with recovery as it reduces cortisol and inflammation in the body. It has also been shown to help with sleeping, reducing hunger and reducing anxiety.
How much CBD should I take?
Dosing varies based on the individual’s needs and concerns. Human research is slim but growing, with suggested doses between 2.5-800mg (yes, that’s a huge range). The oil can be taken at any time during the day. It is placed under the tongue using the tincture to enhance absorption.
How safe is CBD?
CBD seems to be safe, but quality may be a concern with reports of traces of THC, heavy metals and pesticides in some products. Until more definitive research comes out, we don’t recommend this product. Use at your own risk!
Bottom line:
Most CBD research is still on mice and rats. There have been many experiments that support various benefits such as reducing cortisol, alleviating anxiety, and helping sleep. It has great potential to benefit athletes (and others), yet it still lacks definitive evidence in humans and a clear protocol for dosage (i.e. it may not do anything if the dose it too low and vice versa). If you’re desperate, it may be worth trying. Keep in mind most products are very expensive and may contain traces of THC, heavy metals and pesticides. It’s too risky for our recommendation!
