Client Spotlight: Julie’s Story of Ironman and Insulin Resistance
What’s great about working with endurance athletes is that they’re generally incredibly disciplined and ready to work hard. In Julie’s case, she had been doing this for years without results. It gets pretty annoying when everyone else thinks they know what’s right for you. Or when other people just tell you to “eat fewer calories” or “eat cleaner” or “workout more” or whatever. It’s pretty mind blowing. But when you understand how your body is reacting to meal timing and certain macronutrients, it’s incredibly empowering. And at the end of the day, that’s our mission.
What made you look for The Endurance Edge services? What were you trying to accomplish from the start?
I was not looking for The Endurance Edge…. The Endurance Edge found me! I had worked with 5 different nutritionists and 3 different doctors. I had given up hope.
I volunteered at the Triangle Tri summer 2019 and met Chris. We chatted for a while. I liked her message, I liked her approach and I felt a connection. I decided to give it one last try. The original plan was to completely start my fitness journey over, start from scratch, and do it right this time.
Did you hit any roadblocks during the process of working with us? If so, how did that change your approach, mindset or goals?
I have been a lifetime professional roller coaster dieter. Never quite reaching my goals, becoming exhausted from very strict deprivation and always returning to previous habits. In 2012 I was determined to get healthy for the last time. Since then I have remained very active, but have fluctuated because of many roadblocks (broken leg, spine surgery one, broken foot, spine surgery two, insulin resistance diagnosis).
Sometimes roadblocks are not intended to stop us, but point us in a new and better direction. The insulin resistance diagnosis almost broke me, but it is also what ultimately brought me to The Endurance Edge. Finding The Endurance Edge has been life changing for me!
Since starting to work with TEE I knew there would come a day that results would stop/slow. Actually, I hit that point about the time we went into quarantine. The difference this time is that I am not exhausted, I am not frustrated, and I don’t feel like I have been deprived.
We have a solid plan to move forward, and I KNOW Chris will figure out what we need to do next. I do not feel lost, hopeless and ready to give up.
What is the best part of your experience with The Endurance Edge?
Personal and results-based plans! They don’t hand the same program to everyone that walks through their door. They research history, medical issues, what has worked, what has not and develop a personal program for you and tweak it until you see results.
Last month I got my 6 month blood-work results. In 6 months Chris helped me make more progress through appropriate nutrition and properly timed training than I saw in 2 years on diabetes and thyroid medications! I am off all big pharma meds and my blood sugar, thyroid, cholesterol numbers are perfect! (Chris is kind of amazing that way!)
What are some of the lessons or concepts that stuck with you most?
What works for one person may not work for another person. I had read all the books, tried all the tricks, was extremely disciplined, and was even more frustrated. Even if I saw results they were not sustainable.
Treat your body like a science experiment. Find someone knowledgeable to help you turn those science experiment lessons into results.
What would you like to accomplish next?
Next up is working past the current plateau. In the meantime, I keep remembering that plateaus are a good way to practice maintenance.
