First Time 70.3 Triathletes: How to Finish Confidently
In today’s episode, host Chris Newport sits down with Coach Carlie, who is a also working on her PhD in Sports Psychology. We “nerded out” on some recent research regarding first time 70.3 triathletes.
The article she chose was published in 2021 in the International Journal of Exercise Science called “Psychological status during and after the preparation of long-distance triathlon event in amateur athletes.”
This article studied age-group athletes training for their first 70.3 and their psychological status going into their race. More specifically, the research aimed to evaluate levels of motivation, emotion, and passion over six months of training leading up to and one week after a long-distance triathlon.
Once a month, during six months of training, the participants were emailed four questionnaires to complete, and an optional post-race interview was conducted to gather information.
Does 6 Months of Training Affect Triathletes’ Mood?
Results showed that physiological status remained constant throughout training, with a slight increase in intrinsic motivation occurring. Post race interviews showed the athletes attributing their confidence going into the race was due to trust in the preparation set forth by their coach.
We discuss our takeaways from this research, including the value of having a coach and having open communication with them, the importance of having fun during your training, intrinsic motivation and why it’s important.
Training for a 70.3 can be motivating!
Training for your first 70.3 can be a huge undertaking. But given the right tools (a training plan and coach!), it’s possible to not only finish feeling confident, but want to continue to come back to the sport!
