From DNF to 70.3
The latest episode of the Find Your Edge podcast features a heartwarming story of transformation, resilience, and community for one woman taking on triathlon later in life.
Meet Juli.
Her son convinced her to do a pool sprint triathlon 4 years ago. As a runner, she didn’t know much about the sport, and had a bit of a fear of swimming. Despite this, she stepped out of her comfort zone and discovered a new passion for triathlon.
Again, with her son, she decided to train for Santa Cruz 70.3. She grew up there, so was familiar with that area. But without much swim training, she ended up doing the entire swim course on her back and ended up missing the cut off time (the dreaded DNF!).
When she returned to North Carolina, she knew she had to return to the distance! She came to a group open water swim with The Endurance Edge, where our coaches knew she needed some support. She had great fitness and an awesome attitude, but just needed some guidance in the water.
Needless to say, she worked her butt off and completed White Lake Half and IMNC 70.3 in 2022!
One of the surprising parts of her journey is the community she found in our Team. She discusses the profound impact of the friendships she has made on her physical and mental well-being, particularly during menopause.
Show Up…and Eat Your Protein
Listen in to Juli’s infectious laugh, genuine enthusiasm and positive attitude. Her advice to face fears, show up, and find joy in the journey resonates with anyone thinking about diving into triathlon, especially as a menopausal female. Oh, and don’t forget to eat your protein :)
Juli serves as a testament to the notion that with the right mindset, coaching, and community support, anyone (of any size or age) can overcome their fears and achieve greatness in the triathlon world and beyond.
After our podcast, Juli wanted to be sure to add about menopause, health and family:
“One of the many benefits of training (and having fun) that I did not expect was how triathlon improved my health as a woman over 50. I’m going through menopause and as hard as all those sleepless nights, non-stop hot flashes, extra pounds, confusing thoughts, and forgetfulness….it all made me mad. Mad that I had to age! This group helped me gain the control over my body that I needed to do in order to GREATLY improve my life. I’m a grandma too and nothing is more important to me than being around for my family and grandkids. Not just being present but being active. I’m a 58 yr old female and I’m proud to say that I love my body! The Endurance Edge gave me the opportunities and knowledge to be my best and have fun while doing it. I’m forever grateful to the coaches and staff at Endurance Edge!”
Juli, we love you and we’re so proud of you!
