Fueling for Dopey Challenge & Weight Loss
Our mission is to empower people to reach and sustain peak performance and health. So why not share some of the great stories of the people who have done just that?
Our first featured member’s inspirational story is Katie Puttkammer. She’s a hard worker with a positive energy that is highly contagious to everyone around her. Great job, Katie! We love seeing your progress!
What made you look for The Endurance Edge services? What were you trying to accomplish from the start?
I was about to start my training for the Dopey Challenge (5k, 10k, half, full marathon) and I knew that my previous strategies for half marathon training wasn’t going to be enough to get me through 48.6 miles in one weekend. I had heard that a lot of people gain weight when they train for a marathon and was worried that would happen to me. Additionally, I wasn’t happy with where I was in my weight and was hoping I would lose some weight during the training.
Did you hit any roadblocks during the process of working with us? If so, how did that change your approach, mindset or goals?
I was concerned about hitting roadblocks when I went on a trip to Europe and I didn’t have as much control of what I was eating when I was at home. Chris reassured me that I had the tools to make good choices while I was on vacation and encouraged me to enjoy the foods that I would come across on vacation. It was great to have that mindset going into a vacation that I didn’t have to avoid certain foods or feel like I couldn’t enjoy myself.
What was the best part of your experience with The Edge?
I loved having Chris to help guide me the whole way. Working with Chris helped to keep me accountable and she made me feel like my questions and concerns were heard. She was very knowledgeable and was able to break things down for me to understand. She was like having my own personal cheerleader and that meant a lot to me.
What are some of the lessons or concepts that stuck with you the most?
Knowing what my body needs throughout the day for nutrition is something that has stuck with me months after completing my program with Chris. I have closely followed the proportions for what I need for proteins, fats, and carbs and have been able to sustain my progress that I’ve made in the program. I’ve also learned the valuable lessons about how I should fuel before, during, and after races so I can reach optimal performance.
What do you plan to accomplish next?
My next goal is to complete the Marine Corps Marathon and get a PR compared to my first marathon in January. I’m very motivated to work hard to get there and Chris continues to help and support me.
Here’s Katie’s before and after photos (1 year apart). She worked her butt off (literally). Congrats, Katie! We’re so proud of you! Keep spreading that awesome energy!
