How to Boost Resilience for Endurance Sports
In this Find Your Edge podcast, Chris Newport sits down with Coach Ryan to discuss resilience. With Ryan’s background as a guidance counselor, he brings a unique perspective to helping endurance athletes understand and boost resilience. Not only are these helpful to understand in the context of sport, but also for business, family and life skills.
What is Resilience?
Resilience is the ability to bounce back (emotionally, physically, or both) when you have every reason to shut down- but you push on. Resilient people have both tapped and untapped reserves, enabling them to overcome and thrive as they face setbacks, challenges, and fears of endurance life. It is different from motivation. Ryan discusses how they are different and why that’s an important point of clarification.
Different Types of Resilience
There are four different types of resilience. Ryan walks us through each one, including the different words and phrases that are associated with each one. Listen to them and determine which one (or ones) resonates with you, so you can take the action steps to boost them.
- Relational
- Resource
- Street
- Rock Bottom
Once you know “your type,” then listen on to hear about different ways to strengthen or boost your resilience for endurance sports. If you are a member of our Triathlon Training Library, Ryan has a great video with specific exercises to help you identify your type or types of resilience.
Ways to strengthen your resilience may include:
- Being “social” IN your race or joining a team
- Make new goals on the fly
- Chase down a competitor
- Triage your problems
- and more… (listen or watch the video for great tips!)
