Humans of Steel Triathlon is BACK August 27th
In 2020, you might remember the Humans of Steel event we held for our athletes whose races had been canceled.
In fact, we did a few podcasts on it, if you’re interested in listening to its evolution:
- Humans of Steel part 1: from the coach
- Humans of Steel part 2: from the athlete’s perspective
- Humans of Steel part 3: route planning
- Humans of Steel part 4: 1st iron distance race in a pandemic
The name “Humans of Steel” was proposed by one of our athletes (listen to part 2 of the podcast) in the construction industry, noting that “steel is stronger than iron” (no offense to the Ironman branded events).
This year, we are hosting another Humans of Steel for our triathlon community on Saturday, August 27th. This is a great way to practice in preparation for your fall race(s).
Olympic & Mini-Sprint Triathlon
This year, instead of doing an iron distance event, we have organized an olympic and mini sprint course for athletes to complete as a pre-race run-through, big training day, or just a way to have fun with friends! This is a point-to-point race (which means you start in one location and finish in another), which is great practice for our athletes who will be doing Ironman NC in October.
What are the distances?
Olympic distance: 1.6k lake swim, 24 mile bike, 6.2 mile run on the Tobacco Trail
Mini Sprint distance: 300y lake swim, 15 mile bike, and 2 mile run on the Tobacco Trail
Where?
We’ll be using a “point to point” course, where we’ll start at Jordan Lake (in a boat-free section called Weaver Creek Canoe Launch), then ride on the road to the American Tobacco Trail New Hope Church location, where the run will take place. There are a few logistical challenges, but we’ll work through them (remember, this is supposed to be a fun training day)! We’ll also have a full “athlete guide” to detail the course and what you’ll need.
Will there be chip timing or race bibs?
Nope, this race is only timed by you, so we encourage you to have your watch or device. No need for any stickers on your helmet or bike. But for fun, we’ll likely do body marking with your choice of number, motivational phrase or nickname.
Is the course closed?
Nope, this is a fun practice “race.” However, you’ll still have full coach support, lifeguards, volunteers and a cheering section.
How many people can race?
We have limited the event to 30 people, so be sure to get registered early!
What time does it start?
7am, so we can get you out early with minimal traffic and heat
We need volunteers!
If you’re interested in helping out, please fill out this form to volunteer, and thanks!
How do I sign up?
Register online here (be sure to select “in-person” and Jordan Lake–Weaver Creek Canoe Launch). Registration is $35, which also gets you a Team tech shirt. Race entry is included for Team members. Learn more about our Team program here.
Let’s DO IT!!
