From DNF to Crushing It: Jessica Kesler
We’re excited to feature Jessica Kesler as our athlete of the month. She’s truly transformed over the past several months. She keeps us laughing and smiling every time we speak to her. It’s a true joy to work with her and see her develop as an athlete. Her mantra this year? #CrushIt!
What made you look for The Endurance Edge services? What were you trying to accomplish from the start?
I used to run by the office on my 3 mile runs around my apartment and was always curious about what they offered. Then, I met Chris while volunteering at Ironman Raleigh 70.3 on the run course. It was like fate!
I was in the middle of “training” for Ironman NC 70.3 in 2017. (I say “training” because I had no idea what I was doing or what I was in for) I thought I didn’t need a coach, but then I was pulled off the run course with 5k to go at NC. I decided that it was time to team up with Chris and look to crush Ironman NC 70.3 in 2018!
Did you hit any roadblocks during the process of working with us? If so, how did that change your approach, mindset or goals?
It took a while to overcome the negative mindset of food and training. I’ve always struggled with my weight and beaten myself up about it. Chris has really helped me reframe my mindset and make me think more positively about what I’ve been able to do. I still struggle with trying to choose protein over carbs, but I’m getting better!
When increasing my protein intake, I hit a major roadblock as I was having some issues with some foods I was choosing.
We did a food sensitivity test and found out that my suspicions were correct, I have a problem with dairy!
Now I know what foods to avoid as I get close to a big workout or race.
What is the best part of your experience with The Endurance Edge?
The whole team is phenomenal. I love the holistic approach to training. They’ve all cheered me on even with small victories. They also realize that there’s no “one size fits all” approach to training. When I have a crappy week for whatever reason, we just move on and make the next week better.
I also love that you get to meet other athletes who are training for the same things you are. Now I have friends to swim, bike, and run with!
What are some of the lessons or concepts that stuck with you most?
The biggest thing I’ve gained has been confidence in my abilities as an athlete. I still remember the first time Chris called me one of her “athletes.” I said, “Who me?!”
The confidence piece has also transcended beyond triathlons. I feel great about myself, my body, and even feel like an athlete!
What would you like to accomplish next?
Coming up next is OBX Triathlon (half Ironman distance- yea!) 9/15 and the crushing of Ironman NC 70.3 on 10/13!
Right now I’m just focusing on how amazing I’m going to feel when I cross those finish lines. After that, who knows?!
Jessica, we’re so proud of you! We believe in you and know that you’ll cross that finish line with a smile on your face. And dangit, we can’t wait to WITNESS IT!!!! #CRUSHIT
