Supplement Round Up: Ubiquinol (CoQ10)
What is CoQ10?
CoQ10 is a nutrient naturally found in the body. It can be found in its state of ubiquinol and ubiquinone.
What does CoQ10 do?
CoQ10 aides mitochondria with its function of energy production in the body. Supplementing CoQ10 is beneficial when trying to maintain equilibrium of the nutrient in the body.
CoQ10 has many benefits to supplementation. It can help protect your cardiovascular system by protecting blood vessels, enhancing blood flow, preserving nitric oxide, and reducing oxidative stress which can lead to better overall health in an individual.
In athletes, it has been seen to increase beneficial characteristics. In one study, aerobically trained males and females had increased plasma concentration and time to exhaustion and lowered oxidative stress. Another study showed CoQ10 supplementation to increase VO2 Max in cross-country skiers.
How much of CoQ10 should I take?
Doses range from 90 to 200 mg daily, depending on your needs.
How safe is CoQ10?
CoQ10 is extremely safe to supplement. There is a very low chance of toxicity. There are no major side effects.
Bottom line:
Research on CoQ10 supports its characteristics to increase overall health in an individual. It helps the cardiovascular system/blood vessels, increase blood flow in those with diabetes and specific heart diseases. There was heavy support on helping relieve fibromyalgia symptoms.
It may be more beneficial to those who are in their later stages in life where CoQ10 levels are lowered due to aging.
CoQ10 can be beneficial to athletes as it has shown to increase VO2 Max, time to exhaustion, and power output in different types of trained athletes.
